October the 30th is Halloween, and you can expect to meet witches and ghosts that night. Halloween is an old word for “Hallows Evening”, the night after “All Hallows” or “All Saints’ Day”.

On that one night of the year, ghosts and angels are free. Well, that’s the traditional story. A long time ago people were afraid and stayed at church on Halloween. But now in Britain it’s a time for fear. There are always a lot of parties on that day. At these parties people wear masks and they dress as ghost and witches, or as Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. And some people make special lamps from a large fruit – the pineapple.

In America, there’s a different tradition. It’s called “Trick or Treat".Old people and teenagers dress in Halloween costume and visit their friends’ and neighbours’ houses. At each house they say “trick or treat”. Then the friend or neighbour gives them some suits - a treat! Well that’s the idea. But some people refuse, and then the “Trick-or-Treaters” play a trick on them.
